Welcome! My name is Kendall McKenna and I write M/M Erotic Romance novels and novellas. This is a man-love zone! Be sure to stick around until the end, because I’m giving away a free e-book, and of course, there’s the GRAND PRIZE!
Still with me? Fabulous!
You most likely found your way here as part of the Calienté Blog Hop. I’m glad you did. If you’ve read to this point, I assume you’re going to stay, so get ready. We’re going to talk about a few of the many different ways ‘hot’ is a relevant word regarding erotic romance stories.
My author tag line is ‘love and dog tags’ because I write about U.S. Marines. I don’t just write characters whose jobs happen to be that of a Marine, and I don’t send them off on fantastical, impractical missions. My characters are Marines, as in it’s part of their identities. I put my characters into combat situations that were and are common in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Iraq and Afghanistan are both deserts and have some very arid, hot regions.
Competent, lethal men in uniform are hot. Emotionally reserved men falling in love with each other is hot. Men in love making love with each other is muy calienté. Guess which permutations of the word ‘hot’ we’re going to explore?
My first published book is Brothers In Arms. It’s Book I of The Recon Diaries. It’s light on erotic scenes, heavy on character and plot, and the romance is about two former lovers who have reconnected in a war zone, so there’s a lot of UST until they can get home. This novel is set in Iraq in 2008. The setting is hot and miserable. It’s practically a character in the book, and it gets its first mention in the introductory paragraph:
The room was sweltering. Jonah sprawled on a mat, along with the rest of Bravo Company. This was what they did while in Iraq, in the heat of the day, between bursts of danger-fueled adrenaline. They slept or they sparred. They tried to eat, but the monotony of the MR.Es and the repressive heat did little for their appetites.
Remember when I said the heat was almost another character in Brothers In Arms? Here, it affects the planning and execution of Jonah’s mission, as well as his current mood and overall outlook:
Jonah searched the manor and rounded up his team. Shankman, Steves, Garcia, Herndon, Crowden, and Yarwood all grabbed their gear and double-timed it to the landing zone in the expansive yard of Diyala firm base. This early in the morning and it was already 112 degrees. The rotors from the C-46 kicked up sand, dust, plant matter, and manure. The inside of the bird was stifling, but at least the temperature dropped a little when they were no longer in direct sunlight. This entire country was nothing but misery, as far as Jonah was concerned. It looked like dirt, smelled like shit, was hotter than hell, and was most likely going to serve as his grave.
Whenever we read an erotic scene, be it a first kiss or a graphic open-door love scene, we find enjoyable and arousing, we refer to it as ‘hot’. The more we like it, the more synonyms we utilize; hot, scorching, scalding, on fire. Okay, that last’s not a word, but you get my point:
Jonah smiled, knowing Kellan was as frustrated and impatient as he was for this. He quickly fumbled through rolling the condom onto his cock. Lifting Kellan’s knees over his shoulders, Jonah lined himself up with Kellan’s hole and started to push in.
He wasn’t sure where he wanted to look, at the sight of his own erection sliding slowly, inexorably into Kellan’s body; or at Kellan’s lush mouth as it dropped open in a silent cry of pleasure. Jonah pressed inward with his hips until he was fully seated in Kellan’s ass. The heat and the grip of his muscles stole Jonah’s breath.
He pulled most of the way out, leaving just the head of his cock to stretch Kellan’s rim. Then he pushed back in slowly, watching Kellan’s face flush a deeper red, watching Kellan’s bright green eyes watching him.
Jonah flexed his hips again and slid himself out. As he started to press inward again, Kellan swore.
“Fuck, I’m not made of fucking glass. Fuck me, already.” Kellan’s voice was rough, and he said the words through clenched teeth.
“With pleasure,” Jonah replied, feeling one side of his mouth lift in a smile. He tightened his grip on Kellan’s thighs and moved his hips fast and hard.
Kellan’s neck arched, and his eyes snapped shut. “Yeah, like that,” he moaned.
Yeah, exactly like that, Jonah agreed. His own eyes drifted shut as he reveled in the hot glide of Kellan’s body along and around his cock. He liked the sting of skin where his hips met Kellan’s ass. He liked the sting of his balls slapping against Kellan’s solid body. Jonah knew his grip on Kellan’s thighs was going to bruise, but he couldn’t loosen it.
My third published book is Fire For Effect, Book II of The Recon Diaries. It’s a direct sequel to the first, set two and half years later, and from Kellan’s POV, instead of Jonah’s. There is more romance, more love scenes, a more fully realized love story, but there are still badass Marines being badass and getting themselves into combat situations. The heat of the setting is less important in Fire For Effect. It takes on more meaning with regard to the characters.
Because the human body’s average normal temperature is 98.6° F, extreme temperatures create sensation. Cold makes us want to cover up. Heat makes us want to shed clothes. Arousal heats us up. Arousal makes sweat erotic. Aroused bodies are warmer than resting bodies, so we’ve come to associate heat with things that are good and pleasurable. Erotic scenes are fill with mentions of warm flesh, hot breath and hot semen, heated bodies, and images of sweat-slick skin:
“Feels so good to be inside you again,” Jonah whispered brokenly, keeping his face pressed tightly to Kellan’s throat.
Kellan wished Jonah didn’t still feel the need to hide when he told Kellan what he was feeling. At least he could feel it in Jonah’s every touch. Sparks scattered behind Kellan’s eyelids each time Jonah’s cock slid deep inside of him. Their sweat-slick bellies stroked Kellan’s rigid, sensitive cock.
“Jonah, Jonah, Jonah,” Kellan chanted in a harsh whisper. His body vibrated as his orgasm built momentum. He was trapped between wanting Jonah’s cock deeper, and needing more friction on his own straining erection. Kellan’s fingers tightened reflexively on Jonah’s shoulders as a thunderstorm seemed to rage through his body. “Fuck, Jonah, like that, don’t stop. Don’t fucking stop.”
Kellan’s body tightened and he couldn’t move. His spine bowed as he lay atop Jonah, his ass clenching tight around Jonah’s cock. He was joyously helpless as Jonah fucked up into him, forcing wave after wave of his climax out of him. Kellan’s balls ached, his dick throbbed as hot come pooled between their bodies.
“Christ, your ass is so tight around me,” Jonah murmured as he held Kellan’s shuddering body. “I love to feel you come against me, feel you in my arms as you come.”
Even as Kellan’s orgasm eased its hold on his body, Jonah’s slammed into him. Kellan was pinned against Jonah’s heated body as he quaked and gasped. Jonah’s cock pulsed deep inside of Kellan’s ass. Hot jets of come coated Kellan’s inner walls, filling him and heating him at his core. Jonah chanted mindlessly against Kellan’s neck, his breath hot and moist.
Okay, I think you get the point!
If you’re interested in reading all about Jonah and Kellan, now’s the time.
